ALBA SARRAUTE PONS
Visual tragicomedies to understand the world from the circus perspective

NATIONAL AWARD FOR CULTURE IN CATALONIA 2023

Alba Sarraute is a playwright and circus artist. For over 20 years she has been creating tragicomic shows where the body, risk and visual poetry give voice to the invisible. Her language breaks the limits of traditional circus to excite, provoke and transform.

Alba Sarraute is a Catalan circus artist with a long career as a solo show creator:

("Seriously tragicomedy", "The flight show, the fragility of calm", "Looking at Yukali", "I am the other (La Diva)".

She has also worked as an interpreter with directors such as Andrès Lima in Madrid and Giorgio Barberio Corsetti in Rome. Where have you found the theater and circus language that your company wants to direct?

She has directed shows such as "La femme de Trop" by Marcel et ses drôle de femmes or "La Tempesta de Shakespeare" with the Cronopis collective.

And this is her ambition: to create a company of her own to work on the classical dramaturgy of the circus. Based on the characters and the boundary quotations they live; discovering how with the body we can also share tragic or comic stories, without the need for just the word.

A new experience alone, on the street and for all audiences. A sensory journey towards the impossible. The new proposal for 2025 redefines the limits between the body, the object and the emotion.

Lua is a sensory journey that explores human fragility, the search for identity and the power of connection between us. On her birthday, the protagonist, surrounded by memories and unfulfilled desires, tries to light a candle on her cake, but fails. This frustrated attempt triggers an explosion of emotions that leads her to throw the cake in her face, initiating a series of dreamlike moments in which magic, acrobatics and internal struggle merge.

Throughout the show, the character makes an important discovery: He has no light of his own. This revelation transforms his quest to reach the moon into a metaphor for the desire to find what we lack: connection with others.

Yukali returns

Yukali returns with a renewed language that combines circus, café-theater and tragicomic variety. A playful and poetic cry to the wounds of the world, where the body narrates, humor protects and connection transforms.

Alba Sarraute returns to Yukali. Fifteen years after her first great success, the artist recognized with the 2023 National Culture Award revisits Mirando a Yukali, the show that consecrated her. More mature, freer and with a new stage language that oscillates between circus, café-theater and tragicomic variety, Sarraute invites us to return to the lost paradise.

With the body as a narrative tool and humor as a shield, Yukali transforms into a poetic and playful cry in the face of the wounds of the world: wars, deforestation, fear and loneliness. Now, improvisation and direct connection with the audience take the show to a new dimension, more human and more necessary than ever.

Returning to Yukali is not just an artistic return. It is a search. It is challenging the world from fragility and a smile. It is believing again that another place —another future— is possible.
